Beware of Toner Scams!

DO NOT ORDER TONER WHEN SOLICITED OVER THE PHONE!Beware of Printer and Copier Toner Scam Artists! Toner scam artists have been actively targeting MATC staff. Unscrupulous companies target busy office staff with cold calls asking if you need toner for your copier or printer. Legitimate venders NEVER CALL YOU!

In March one MATC Department agreed to receive a carton of copier toner over the phone. They also received an invoice for $349 plus $100 for shipping. Seem rather high priced? The national vendor’s price to MATC would be only $65. Most of MATC’s copiers have toner inclusive contracts. You don’t have to pay for any toner; it’s included in your repair contract.

In April another department was victimized by another toner scam. This individual received a call asking if the department needed toner for their printer. Agreeing to the offer, two cases of toner were shipped and billed to a MATC P-Card. This time two boxes with separate invoices were received for $974.58 each. Does $439 per toner cartridge plus $96.58 for shipping and handling each box seem excessive? This toner cost MATC $487.29 per cartridge. This same toner ordered from Office Depot would cost $125.

Remember, most copiers include toner in their repair contracts while laser printers do not. Toner should only be ordered from District Stores, Office Depot, Office Max, or Staples.
