CETL Roundtable ‑ Visual Literacy/Media Literacy will be held Friday, March 2, at 11:30 a.m. ‑ 1 p.m. in the CETL Training Rm, Admin Bld Rm 164.

Bring your lunch to the CETL training room in the Administration Building, Rm 164, and join in a roundtable discussion of Visual Literacy this Friday, March 2, beginning at 11:30 a.m.. The term “visual literacy” was coined in 1969 and deals with communication through graphic or pictorial elements. It also is referred to as “media literacy.” Why is it important? How is it used? How do we use it in the context of teaching and learning?

A text document like a poem, memo or novel, that communicates effectively follows certain rules of grammar and composition guidelines. Similarly, a photograph, painting, logo, advertisement or motion picture scene that communicates well must also follow rules and guidelines if it is going to transmit the message that it’s composer intended.

Some photographs grab our attention and make a strong emotional impact. Another photo of the same subject can be ho‑hum and do little or nothing for us. The difference between the two pictures is what visual literacy explores.

Add a little variety to your workday and join in this lunchtime discussion of visual literacy.
