matc-interns-5.jpgThe UW Madison PEOPLE program (Pre-College Enrichment Opportunity Program for Learning Excellence) is designed as a pre-college pipeline for students of color and/or low-income students - most of whom are the first in their families - to potentially attend college. As in years past, the PEOPLE program has made available a summer internship program for students who will be high school seniors in the fall semester.

The summer internship involves matching students with an instructor for guided academic training and placing students in internships with organizations that align with their area of academic/professional interest. Interns reside on the UW campus, taking courses during the morning and working in their placements in the afternoon. The PEOPLE program provides these students with stipends for their work.

MATC was pleased to participate in the internship program this summer with the placement of four interns:

Nicolas, a junior from the city of Beloit, interned with the Office of Diversity and Community Relations. Nicolas assisted with several projects in the area of community relations. Nicolas loves to build things and he is interested in pursuing a degree in engineering.

Erica, a junior from Milwaukee’s High School of the Arts (majoring in dance), interned with the Office of Diversity and Community Relations at the South Madison Education Center. Erica assisted with the research and identification of small business resources. She loves dance, art and music and plans to pursue a professional career in dance.

Nilajah, a junior from Madison, interned with the President’s Office. Nilajah assisted with various duties such as handling incoming calls and student assitance, cataloging library resources, mailings, and reproducing the 1973 Master Plan for distribution to the district board and college council members. Nilajah is a very pleasant and intelligent young woman who has a very bright future.

Pavuam, a junior from Madison, interned with the Center for Excellence in Teaching where she assisted with the Center’s major move by cataloging resources and information. Pavuam enjoys business and working with children. She plans to pursue a degree in business administration or elementary education.

It was a pleasure to work with these young leaders and PEOPLE scholars. We look forward to partnering with the UW-Madison School of Education next summer and working with more outstanding students.
