Banned Books Week in Madison (and at MATC)
September 25, 2007 | EditorLocal celebrity readers will recognize Banned Books Week (which runs nationally from Sept 29 to Oct 6) by reading selections from classic literature and other books that have been challenged or banned in our nation. The reading will be held on Thursday, September 27, from 6 - 8 p.m. in the Open Book Café, College Library, University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. This celebration of literature and freedom of expression will be free and open to the public.
John Nichols, writer for The Nation magazine and The Capital Times, will host the event. Guest readers include Tess Arenas, Emily Auerbach, Trudy Barash, Stephen Braunginn, Dawn C. Crim, Ada Deer, Jim Fleming, Ronnie Hess, Isabel Jacobson, Gloria Ladson-Billings, Stu Levitan, David Mayhew, Oscar Mireles, Fabu Carter Mogaka, Lorrie Moore, John Quinlan, Rockameem, Sandi Torkildson, Mai Zong Vue, Stan Woodward, and students involved in the Gay Straight Alliance for Safe Schools, Youth Speaks and the ACLU-UW student chapter.
The Madison area Banned Books Week kick off event has been organized with planning assistance from the Madison Public Library, the South Central Library System, the University of Wisconsin-Madison Library System, the MATC Libraries, and the American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin Foundation.
