MATC is pleased to announce two exciting opportunities to learn about Chinese language and culture:

1. Starting this spring MATC will launch a new college-transfer Chinese language course. Faculty or staff interested in Chinese are encouraged to enroll. There has been great initial student response to this course, within one week of posting the we already had 15 students enrolled. A Chinese 2 course will be offered in fall 2008, and for those wishing to continue the study to levels of greater fluency, this two-course sequence is designed to prepare students for entry to the UW-Madison 6-credit Chinese 202 course offered in Spring 2009.

Course information: Intro to Mandarin Chinese

An introduction to the fundamental phonetic system and grammar of standard spoken Chinese and written language including modern simplified Chinese characters. Course Transfers to UW-Madison (as Chinese 121).

3 credits (Liberal Arts Transfer)
Course No. 802-230-601, Class No. 64169
Mon/Wed 4:30 - 6:20 p.m., MATC DTEC (211 N. Carroll St, Madison)

2. This May 16-27, the Wisconsin Technical College System International Education Committee is coordinating a tour of China for WTCS faculty, staff and administrators. The program is designed to be a professional development activity related to manufacturing, education and culture in China. The itinerary will include visits to businesses, colleges and cultural sights in Beijing, Xian, Hong Kong and Shenzhen. The cost of the program is $3,750 including airfare, lodging and meals. Interested individuals should contact their campus WTCS International Committee representative (Geoff Bradshaw at MATC) by January 21, 2008. See attached flyer for more information.

For those with interest in China, this is a great opportunity to learn the basics of the language and then experience the country in person.
