In 1999, the Mayor of Madison, Susan J.M. Bauman, appointed a Task Force on Race Relations. She suggested that a strategic plan for improving race relations in Madison might include activities such as a multi‑cultural festival that would celebrate and promote the building and appreciation of Madison’s diversity. Thus was born Celebrate Madison! (PDF: 116KB) a community festival.
The goal of Celebrate Madison! is to bring together all the ethnic communities of Madison such as Italian, Hispanic, Latino, Native American, German, Asian American, African American at one event to learn and experience each other’s cultures and traditions. Many ethnic communities have individual festivals but Celebrate Madison! is the only festival that encompasses all communities and cultures.
Celebrate Madison! will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2008 from 11 a.m. ‑ 6 p.m. at the MATC Downtown Education Center. MATC has already reserved a general table, but there is still time for your program or community service to reserve a space. Contact Marty Crabbs at 258‑2461 at the DTEC if you wish to participate.
