Waunakee Girl Scouts at MATC Vet Tech programHaving a new pet can be a big job but thanks to Waunakee Girl Scout Troop 519, the job will be easier for those who adopt a cat from Dane County Friends of Feral (DCFOF) or a dog from the MATC Veterinary Technician Adoption program.

Saturday April 12, Girl Scout Troop 519 presented first time pet owner kits to Dane County Friends of Feral and the MATC Veterinary Technician Adoption program. The Girl Scouts put together kits that included toys, treats and items needed for a pet’s first night at home. The Troop chose this as their project to earn their Bronze Award.

They presented the kits to Dr Susan Kresbach, coordinator for DCFOF and Amy Ebben and Linda Jerry, Veterinary Technician students here at MATC. The Girl Scouts toured the MATC Vet Tech program area (PDF: 424KB) as well as, the Feral spay day event that took place here at MATC Saturday April 12. The girls were able to see animals being prepped for surgery, an actual surgery, cats in recovery and ear mites under the microscope.

Feral Spay Days are held at MATC four or five times a year and provide Vet tech students, as well as Veterinary students, opportunities to use their nursing skills and provided community service. During the 2007-2008 school year over 300 cats were spayed or neutered here at MATC through this program.

Dr. CC Sheldon, Vet Tech program; Kathy Waters, MATC Mail Center coordinator and assistant Girl Scout troop leader; and Michelle Laseman, Girl Scout troop Leader, coordinated efforts to make this a successful day for all.

The Waunakee Troop also made treat stockings to send with the first-semester pets. The girls were respectful of all cultures and decided to make fish stockings for the cats and bone stockings for the dogs that could be used year-round.

A special thanks to Wal-Mart for a scholarship for the girls to use on a community service project, Mad Cat, Mounds Pet Store, the Cats’ Agenda, Waunakee Family Dollar and Pet Smart for their donations to the bags and/or discounts on merchandise that was included in the kits.
