Mark Sandberg, an MATC Liberal Arts Transfer student has been named one of 47 Jack Kent Cooke Scholars for 2008. Mark was nominated in February by MATC. In addition to nominating Mark, Foundation Executive Director Bob Dinndorf had to submit an extensive college profile that provided a context in which the selection committee could evaluate our candidate’s qualifications.
On April 30 we heard from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation indicating that Mark was selected from among 600 successful applicants to receive one of 47 Undergraduate Transfer Scholarships. The scholarship will pay up to $30,000 annually for tuition, room, board and related expenses for two years enabling Mark to conclude his undergraduate degree. At the time of his application for the scholarship he was planning to attend UW–Madison.
Says, Bob, “I announced the scholarship to him during a break in his Intermediate Algebra Class Thursday afternoon. He was shocked. He classmates were all buzzing and of course wanted to borrow money. The faculty member is Tony Przybilski, who was gracious enough to allow my interruption prior to an exam. I also left some Foundation chocolates for him to share with his classmates and an MATC t-shirt to wear as he travels to the other end of State Street in a few months.”
